The Psychology of Gun Care

Anybody who is part of the greater firearms community, or at least pays attention to the public’s fascination with firearms – for it, or otherwise – can appreciate that the human mind is undoubtedly responsible for the overall love of all things gun related vs. firearms thinking for themselves and going off autonomously. Ask Alec Baldwin … he knows all about that.

That being said, even though there are low cost alternatives, many firearm selections in the gun store jewelry case can be very expensive. And, depending on the brand, model, optional features or even limited edition versions, you could be looking at thousands of dollars, not including adding essential accessories that you can’t live without. Wives generally agree, not to affront any of the growing number of women who are joining the ranks of gun owners nationwide.

So, over the years, I couldn’t help but take note of those very same consumers being unwilling to invest an additional 1% in firearm maintenance products. For that, people pay attention to price points. Fascinating. You want the gun, but you don’t want to take the best care of it? Better yet, that guy will spend $12 on an exotic six pack of microbrew while he ponders his rationale.

Maybe it’s about not understanding the value of the purchase, thinking that any available aerosol in the garage will do because all sprays are the same, or better yet, if it works on my car, it’ll work on my guns. Sure.

There is engineering that goes into design before firearms manufacturing, not to mention related ballistics research. Modern firearms have such finely precisioned parts that fit so snugly that you have little room for error. Your pistol is just crying for attention. I think I just heard your semi-auto cry for help like the Tin Man. I really did need some oil for those squeeky joints.

There is also another component to all of this – machoism. From the stubbornness to do nothing, even under duress, or the temptation to show how smart you are by using something random to fix any problem, like MacGyver. Just because you are an expert shot, or accomplished hunter, that does not make you an expert on firearm maintenance products.

Just take the time to look into this product category. Don’t judge a book by its cover (aka pretty labels) and don’t go cheap, but don’t buy the most expensive option just to have bragging rights with your buddies. Take good care of your firearms, and keep them in fire ready condition, and don’t let that peppered rust form. If you let it happen, shame on you. Very avoidable.
