Considering various State laws and restrictions, it goes without saying that anybody transporting a firearm should be using some form of carrying case, unless of course, they are walking around open carry with an IWB – Inside The Waistband style holster, or OWB – Outside The Waistband type holster. In either case, coverage is unnecessary beyond concealment.
Among gun cases, there are both heavy-duty hard plastic designs and softer lightweight options usually available in nylon – padded or unpadded. The better cases offer padded protection, typically available in form of foam which is sometimes molded or sized to fit firearms. There are also specialty products like discreet carry notebooks that are ideal for small and medium frame pistols.
Bags for competition shooting and other range bag products almost always come with multiple pocketed zipper enclosure systems, as well as velcro closures. Most tactical designs feature the Molle system, which stands for Modular Lightweight Load Carrying System, which is designed to easily add attachments to the storage solution, as needed. Although, hunters and shooters can easily choose more simplified carrying luggage.
Essentials include a main section for the firearm or firearms, and pockets for ammo, magazines, eyes and ears, and other accessories. Typically, a handgun bag is no larger than a briefcase, if not smaller, while a long gun bag needs to be at least several inches longer than the longest barrel firearm you have. And, you want to have a bag with padding, especially if you choose to throw it around. You want to avoid metal-to-metal contact if you’re gonna be rough.
With security in mind, all firearms should be locked, and you should even consider securing the outside closure with an additional lock. Of course, airline travel will require, among other things a TSA-approved lock on the case.
I did notice that European bag styling is a little different than in the U.S. where as many bags are either made of waxed canvas with leather accents, or leather all together, and lined with with wool padding. The styling also tends to be more traditional, if not heavier and more substantial in nature.
I also think it’s a smart idea to include some gun care essentials in one compartment. That can include a bore cleaning rope if a rod and accessories don’t fit, a silicone and / or lead cloth for easy after action wipe downs, and maybe a mini-aerosol of cleaner or gun spray.
