Firearms Maintenance expertise and recommendations for the firearms user community, from step-by-step directions to just sharing years of experience.

My first Glock made me a newbie, until my second, etc.

My first handgun was a Glock 23 that I bought more than 20 years ago. I am pretty sure that’s considered a Gen 3.

As it relates to gun care, I had never, to this day, used anything on it besides synthetic lubricants – grease and oil – along with water-based gun cleaner and an occasional spray of aerosol based cleaner degreaser, with or without lube. No nasty solvents. No metal brushing. No scrubbing. No hard buildup.

I haven’t put heavy use into this pistol, which has run flawlessly, but the mag springs are softened up, and there is a subtle sign of scratch marks on the front hood of the barrel, but that’s it. This semi-auto is in fire ready condition. Trigger lock in place. Tucked away in my range rug.

When I go to the range with this piece of hardware, which isn’t often lately, I go thru no more than two boxes of .40 cal. at a time, and I try to use no more than two torso targets on traditional NRA certified paper stock. You know, the tanned, clean break type. I have the same eyes and ears in the bag too after all these years, but I did just get prescription range glasses because I need them at my age, but worth it.

When I leave the port, I always do my best to wipe off the lead residue off my hands with treated wet wipes, because black stains on your fingers is not health food. And, I don’t want to mark up everything I touch afterwards.

Having worked in the defense industry going back many years ago, and also being privileged enough to have worked with or exposed to many very special people in-the-know on both the manufacturing and operator side of the firearms industry, especially the medium caliber kind, I know that my maintenance regimen has been correct. Even the celebrity types I’ve rubbed shoulders with knew what they were talking about. It’s not all Hollywood.

I know it’s hard to differentiate between opinions, and whether something is the truth or not, but the better products speak for themselves. And usually, the people who are paid heavily to wear a logo are rarely respected as having the soundest opinion. That is why you have to do your own research, ask questions, and trust yourself.
