A hunter or a firearms enthusiast, or even fishermen, are generally referred to as outdoor sportsmen. And with the moniker of sportsman comes a certain stigma, which is usually most often referred to in opposing political circles within isolated urban centers. That, in itself, is an interesting phenomena, but it is not the focus of this blogpost.
Being a sportsman is not distinctly American so much as a persona, but it is often highlighted by those men and women who stereotypically enjoy the outdoors, believe in self-sufficiency, are meat eaters and enjoy their liberties. This is clearly a trait that not all people share, not even in the United States.
With this kind of temperament comes personal positions on various social issues, and inevitably face opposition from those who think differently. That’s fine. However, the life of the sportsman is being threatened, much like endangered species, even though this group has the fundamental support of at least half of our nation’s people. I am not speaking of political persuasion, but of the right of free will, movement and access to continue one’s recreational and personal security interests.
I know that it may seem like I am tip-toeing around with words as not to be direct, but that is because I don’t want to get caught up in the weeds. This discussion is about bigger concepts. It is about the greater picture of what we are doing, where we are going, and what we think of all of this. As a society, we need to be introspective, and decide where we stand individually on the overall debate over what is right, and what is wrong. Any controversy over the life and times of the sportsman is simply a mechanism by which we can engage what is going on to help determine are values are.
In simple terms, sportsmen want access to their recreations, and without constraints. And, they want to be able to ensure that and other freedoms that they have known their entire lives go undisturbed, as did their forefathers. And, they don’t want anybody with creative constructs to mess with that. I think you get the point. So, please be patient as I dance around this topic.
From what I have experienced in discussing this topic with others from around the world, they are watching us, closely. We set the pace, if you will, and whether we like it or not, America leads by example. In other words, if we fold, others will follow, quickly. That is how fragile freedom and liberty is globally, buttressed by the never-ending forces of evil around the world who are hell bent on taking advantage of any opportunity to put an end to this beautiful experiment called the United States of America. Why? Because we are a reminder that they are wrong. Good is stronger than evil. Light will defeat the darkness. Corny, but true, no matter how hard that road is to walk down.
By supporting the very notion of the sportsman, I know that I am comforted by that position. I know it is in the right. And, I know it is necessary for us all. This isn’t about participation, but a validation of what must be for us to thrive and maintain the continuity of the best possible way of life in this land.
