America is founded on freedoms and open space, and sport shooting is at the heart of our nation’s values. Unless of course, you don’t believe in it.
I went shooting for the first time in a while recently, mostly because I have been too busy catching up on customer orders. It was a nice afternoon that was accentuated by getting the chance to shoot outside on open land. I shook the rust (off my skills) and finished nicely. The sound of continuous pings is always satisfying. And, I did it all from a good distance without anything to stabilize me. Iron sights. Romeo dot. It was all working for me.
For the recreational shooter, this is easily understood. But, for the anti-gun people, this is a simple pleasure they will never get to appreciate. Those who have never shot and never will – which is ok – not knowing should not be the basis for opposing. One’s freedoms are important, just as it is for their own loves, and causes. Mutual respect in any society is paramount for our success as one nation.
On a more personal level, friends, acquaintances and relatives who are dug in on being critical of firearms and those who believe in this recreation, continue to miss the point. I have much more respect for those who choose not to own guns, but at least vote their conscience in a supportive way. Though, learning and understanding never hurt anybody. Knowledge is power. I fondly remember meeting a liberal writer who asked me to provide insight into the mind of the 2A community. Why, so you can use it against people? Sorry. I smiled, and walked away.
