Tetra Gun Liquid Blue cold bluing solution is widely recognized as the most effective formula available. Unlike the hot blue process, which requires treating gunmetal in multiple bath solutions and requiring such resources, expertise and time, the quicker cold blue alternative is not the same, but it can be very impressive if done properly.
Upon contact with metal, the chemical reaction with the surface begins to transform almost immediately. For the Tetra Gun product, you can repeat the process up to 7 times before your layers lead to a totally blackened look that many seek. After each pass, you want to stop the effect by spraying the parts down with the gun spray, or even isopropyl alcohol.
Hot bluing is the best choice for creating the most interesting rainbow swirl effects, but it is costly. However, the maximum black finish effect can be achieved equally by either method. In my own work, pouring the solution over the surface, or dunking it, will give you better results than trying to paint it on, or trying to just touch it up. Imperfections show.
Also, it is important to note that its common knowledge within the gunsmithing and firearms maintenance community that steel wool is used to scrape off pre-existing bluing or other finishes before applying a new bluing. This is true, but a chemical-based approach will yield superior results because you want a consistent finish with as little marks of imperfection as possible. This is unavoidable if you are dealing with damage, but ultimately, you want to prepare the gunmetal surface with Tetra Gun Blue & Rust Remover.
When using both products, it is important to follow the instructions. You also want to avoid these liquids from leeching onto other surface materials to avoid potential damage. And please note – you want to wear gloves when handling the chemicals, in addition to washing your skin if it comes in contact.
The results of a cold blue can be very successful, as I was told by an antique car restorer who has used the product regularly for many years. So yes, there are other applications besides firearms. Though, for gun owners who are looking to freshen up the look of a finish, if handled skillfully, the results are worth it.
