I guess you are an insider into the mysterious world of gun ownership. To the anti-gunner, this is all so scary. “What do you do with that thing?”
For those gun owners who don’t really know, it’s ok to ask. The only related gun cleaning accessories that stump more people are the bore guides. People open up a cleaning and wonder, “Where does that go?” I will keep you in suspense, and I will save that answer for another blog post.
The brass jag – sometimes made of ridiculously cheap tin that easily gets mashed threads, or plastic that will easily melt down or warp under any kind of use – is designed to provide a really good cleaning surface for inside the gun bore. By sizing it to the correct caliber, and with a clean cotton patch draped over it, a gun cleaning rod will drive the dressed jag down the bore, making for a maximum tight fit that will pick up the most carbon fouling. Then, since its dirty, you want to change out the patch, and repeat until clean. Makes sense, right?
A patch holder is effective, but it isn’t quite the same. Some people double up the patch and then sometimes the way the material folds down over the jag’s edge can make it too tight, and you can get stuck. Don’t confuse this with the square vs. round patch debate – it doesn’t matter. Then, you can get blind spots on the patch, visible as stripes. That means gaps are created on the creases, so you can actually miss some spots. That is why I think the jag is most effective.
The cotton mop is good, but it doesn’t provide the same affect. However, some people like to clean and reuse mops. In all cases, these are accessories for the second step in gun bore cleaning that follows the bronze- or nylon brushing. The Tetra Gun Bore Boa bore cleaning rope kind of represents the best of both worlds, though you need to stay vigilant with cleaning the rope of buildup. You don’t want to recontaminate, right?
