First, look at this kit below from Tetra Gun care …

With a good kit, it can serve you well for many years by just replacing used and worn-out accessories.
You can go to a gun shop, or better yet, a low-end chain store, and see a really inferior cleaning kit, made with cheap materials and low-grade cleaner and lubricant. Any experienced gun owner can see the difference. And, there are also a few very expensive gun cleaning kits that are loaded with things you don’t need, yet still lack some of the practicality and usefulness many shooters want back at the bench.
To find the sweet spot, the Tetra Gun ValuPro III Universal cleaning kit model addresses most needs pretty well. You start with a hard plastic reusable case, grease, CLP, a coated 34″+ stainless steel rod with a t-grip spinning rubber handle, cotton patches, a bore guide, both a handgun / rifle and a shotgun caliber patch holder made of brass, and three brass core nylon brushes sized to the three most common calibers in shooting sports – .22 cal., 9mm and 12ga. From there you can add any bronze brush, jag or mop you might want, if you do.
I rarely meet anybody who could use accessories for a dozen calibers. That isn’t even common for a gunsmith. So, a huge box of cleaning accessories is cool to see, but you’re paying for waste. If anything, I would like a second bronze brush of my favorite bore size. And when it comes to patches, you will need different sizes for different calibers, unless you go the scissor route and cut down patches from a larger size for everything. That’s fine, but one size doesn’t fit all. You will certainly find out when you get stuck half way down a bore. Oops.
For around $25, you can get yourself a good cleaning kit, for keeps. Spend twice that money and wonder if you aren’t better off just wasting $9.99 on the throw-away option. And don’t trust a gun store that pushes crap like that. Love your guns. Clean and lube them and do it with good materials.
