I have been involved with firearm maintenance for almost three decades, and I can clearly see the trend, which is consistent and unwavering – handgun demand provides the foundation for business in the gun business right now, while long gun markets wain. The AR craze has receded, hunting with firearms continues its slow and steady decline, and shotguns follow suit both in the field and at the shooting range.
In the world of gun care, the demand for cleaning kits points strongly towards handguns, and handgun calibers of course, led by 9mm. That is true in the U.S. and abroad. Interestingly, I see .22 and .25 caliber rounds moving up the ranks as they make for ideal training rounds and are embraced by the growing population of female sport shooters, not to ignore the obvious interest by all citizens in home defense and self-defense in general. I am sure the concealed carry community can attest to this.
Demand by caliber on store shelves tells the story pretty accurately. There are some calibers that are shared between pistol and rifle owners, but it seems apparent that handguns are the most popular platform for firearms enthusiasts, and for good reason. After brushes and mops, I see cotton patch sizes, which also helps give indications on demand. Then, there is cleaning rod length. Since most handguns barrels are between 2-4″ long, those users won’t need a full-length steel rod, or Bore Boa cleaning rope, for that matter to get the job done. More so, we at Tetra Gun sell a lot of the jumbo swabs which are on a stick that is long enough to gun down a short bore with solvent or gun lube.
When you visit a gun shop, don’t you see mostly cases of semi-auto pistols dominating the case. Revolvers are always a great go-to, especially for newbies, but the consumer’s fascination with magazines isn’t going away any time soon. Even with a small number of rounds, often found in smaller frame handguns, there is a satisfaction and convenience in fully unloading into a paper silhouette at the range.
In terms of cleaning products, I still see CLP products leading the way, with synthetic lubricant oil and grease, along with any bore cleaning liquids or sprays. Rifles and shotguns tend to need more of the specialty products that are available.
