The Right to Bear Arms 2023

I know there are people who are dreadfully afraid of firearms, and they are frightened of even the thought of picking on up, let alone learning how to use one. That’s fine … to a point. Many of those people also envision a world where there are no guns, and they believe it is a righteous path to do everything they can to take firearms away from everyone else. An imposing of their views and values over the fundamental freedom of all of us to choose for ourselves, but let’s put that aside for now.

This month, watching the disturbing news in the Middle East should bring the subject of the right to self-preserve and protect one’s own life to the forefront. Israel, for example, has let anti-gun voices dictate the narrative in a very dangerous place and time. Those people who were attacked were virtually defenseless, and you can see the results. Shame on anyone who can’t process the obvious in their minds. This is not about politics. It is about self-defense, which is another way of saying “the right to live.”

Life is precious and fragile, and it only takes one moment for evil to rear its ugly head on an innocent person and do irreparable harm. There is no compensation for horrific actions, and we must all come to an agreement as a society that law enforcement should not be burdened with the impossible expectation of protecting us – all of us – 24/7. That is a myth.

So, if we accept that obvious fact, and agree that we don’t want to be victims of those who would harm us, we can’t just be defenseless. There is crime, and a civilized society can’t prosper without law and order. Chaos can’t be allowed to prevail. So, if anti-gun people can be reasonable in this regard, there must be an acceptance of firearms on some level vs. the escalating agenda of stripping us all of the right to bear arms.

The political opposition to gun ownership has not presented a viable or reasonable alternative to firearms, probably because they can’t see beyond simply hoping that we will be safe out of sheer luck, assuming they aren’t actually in favor of leaving this Earth soon, which is another matter. We have the right to protect ourselves, but we also have a responsibility to preserve life. Legally, within our homes, but morally throughout our communities. Without that mindset, we are weaker for it.

As Americans, we shouldn’t be so influenced by foreign thoughts, alternate values, different beliefs or worse than that, the threat of those opposed to our way of life to try everything they can to change it. Maybe because they think their ideology is better, or more probably because of disdain for our country and the overall success of our American and Western values. It doesn’t matter because it’s our country. I say, don’t tread on me.
