Pistol-caliber carbine rifles are growing in popularity while well-established AR15 product momentum seems to be waning, but probably due to market saturation. Shooting enthusiasts, including competition shooters, are taking advantage of long guns in general in handgun calibers like 9mm. In a rifle platform, 40 and 45 cal. are now more palatable while being more costly. Still, nothing beats the economy of a 22LR bullet.

Of the carbines that I have shot, there is a universal vulnerability with magazine catch and feed, which can usually be addressed with proper cleaning and lubrication of those contact points and surfaces. Sticking to OEM parts will also minimize operational failure. There is no bigger downer than an untimely jam or misfeed.

The other related product category is pistol carbine conversion products. Adding a larger platform can add stability and ultimately accuracy to a semiauto handgun, even without adding barrel length. In its design, a conversion kit can be as simple as popping the handgun into the mount, or it can involve much more detail depending on the complexity of the product. But then again, that is the case with many things. In the end, this often short-barreled product will be fun at the range while adding reliability and functionality in a home defense environment.

Varying by brand and model, such conversion kits could include the following features: a Picatinny rail, an arm brace and/or stabilizer, a reserve magazine carrier, a charging handle, a vertical foregrip and a pistol extraction release button. Personally, I like to keep it simple with comfort and functionality in mind.
