There are different categories of gun cleaners. Of course, I am only talking about gun cleaning products specifically designed for use on firearms. No industrial products. No automotive formulas. Real gun cleaners.
In an aerosol, Tetra Gun Action Blaster is a true cleaner degreaser, intended for use on gunmetal as it blasts away fouling and mostly evaporates off afterwards. From there, wipe off excess. You should also add brushing to the treatment to help with removal, especially in stubborn areas.
Also in an aerosol is the Tetra Gun Spray aka Triple Action, which is a lubricant spray, and also considered a CLP (clean, lubricate and protect) product. So, you will initially experience the cleaner function, while leaving a protective lubricate coating on gun parts. Once again, wipe down the excess off of metal. In the bore, pass thru patches, cotton mop or jag down the bore to help remove residue. The same goes with the Tetra Gun Bore Boa concept.
In a liquid, the strongest choice designed for hard buildup is the Tetra Gun Copper Solvent. The reaction will begin to impact a gunmetal surfaces immediately, and you could let it stand for a while before swabbing out. And, you can follow that up with the Action Blaster to stop that chemical reaction.
In all cases, you want to clean, but them remove solvent residue from gunmetal because you ultimately want a quality lubricant to make contact with the gunmetal. So, if your patches are not coming out clean, do it again. I have always found that running 91%+ isopropyl alcohol along gunmetal surfaces will remove that solvent residue. Of course, it will evaporate quickly in prepping the surface adequately. Please note, you still have work to do if hard buildup still remains.
If you use the Tetra Gun Lubricant or Triple Action CLP liquid products, you will be doing something called “bore conditioning” which will help minimize future buildup on your firearms parts. So, it is a good idea to start this behavior when you are ready to use the shotgun, rifle or handgun for the first time. If not, the fluoropolymer particles will still be able to get under and help life fouling out of gunmetal pores. Polish in the lube and see what your cotton patches look like. You ultimately want to see clean patches.
Another cleaner choice is the Tetra Gun Carbon Cleaner, which is a lighter cleaner that will clearly help remove carbon, but not so much the harder fouling. Many black powder and rimfire shooters have used this product for decades with great results. It comes in a variety of package sizes, including a foaming bore aerosol option.
Then, there is the Tetra Gun Cleaner Degreaser for those looking for a very gentle water-based cleaner that won’t irritate your skin or carry any strong odors. It is ideal for light duty use, especially for pistol users. In general, if you are using synthetic lubricants from Tetra Gun, whether it be the grease, lube or clp, the need for a stronger cleaning product is less likely. Nylon brushes and cotton patches, and maybe a few swabs are all you will probably need.
Alternatively, when you introduce bronze brushes, which are needed to remove hard buildup, along with using various strong solvent products, you are going down a different road. You are asking for more work. That is why I believe in the philosophy of only using stronger solutions only when necessary.I
Time and again, most people run into problems when they over-lubricate, over-clean leaving tons of solvent residue and introduce secondary cleaning products to the same surfaces. You are asking for trouble. You don’t know what the chemical interactions are and you are at least making a mess, leading to caked-up or gummed-up gunmetal. Sound familiar? It is most commonly the older shooters who are married to the idea of traditional bore solvents and alike that experience this, while refusing to adapt to change. So be it.
