Don’t let rust, corrosion and hard buildup get the best of you. Take care of your firearms investment.
I think most gun owners have an idea about carbon fouling, that is residue from the combustion process of the primer and gunpowder engaging while a cartridge is fired inside a gun barrel, also known as the bore. In effect, some of that powder does not fully burn off and is left there as fouling.
Firearms users should do their best to relieve the gunmetal surface of such debris, ideally by preventing much of it in the first place by properly lubricating surfaces before shooting, but certainly cleaning as effectively as possible after action.
Some companies claim they can offer solutions by using residue-resistant bore coatings, but it never works out that way.
There is always a tradeoff. And then there is the fouling that comes from the prevalent copper jacketed bullets which literally shed off copper that embeds into the pores of the steel, and then transforming to make removal even more difficult. But yes, there are full metal jackets made of non-copper metals, but they aren’t as common.
For shotgun shells, smokeless product makes life easier, but overall, shotgun shooting means you need to deal with often dirty lead fouling.
Overall, rust and corrosion are a firearm user’s enemy and proper firearm maintenance is needed. The question is, which path will you take? The question is, are you the kind of hunter who will return to the car with a damp gun and wait days or longer until you uncovered the peppered rust before dealing with it?
Even air rifle bores need some TLC. Not the same, but they count.
Back in the 1980s, Tetra Gun care came up with the gun care solution term called bore conditioning for a reason. It works.
Tetra Gun Lubricant, when polished into your gun metal, will penetrate the pores and fill in the microfractures in the steel, and creating a ball bearing smooth surface. This will work on all firearms, including handguns, rifles and shotguns. It will act as a barrier from the environment, including preventing most fouling from adhering to the surface in the first place. it’s so effective, after a shoot, you can literally dry wipe the bore and other gun parts down and remove fouling while leaving a lube finish in place. Plus, over time with each treatment, it will improve.
For a cleaner, Action Blaster cleaner degreaser aerosol, the company’s Carbon Cleaner formula or the stronger Copper Solvent liquid gel will do a great job. There are choices, including whether or not you want peace of mind. I would prefer keeping guns in fire-ready condition.
