The modern term Prepper or even the Survivalist is not new in describing those who are trying to be fastidious in their planning around the potential risks and threats that can unexpectedly occur in life. Call it a crisis management plan. Yes, in the 50s and 60s that kind of astute person was investing in a bomb shelter or canning food for long-term storage.
Today, there are high quality long-term storage foods that can be quickly hydrated and cooked, along with alternative electrical power sources and a plethora of life supporting tools and emergency preparedness kits full of goodies. We hope these things will never be called into service, but the squirrels understand.
When it comes to firearms and related metal self-protection and hunting or even fishing hardware, you do want to take care of these products, especially if one day the Walmart is vaporized. Just saying.
The age-old concept of military-style mothballing of guns can be done, but hopefully without the impractical condition of the firearms. They won’t be in fire-ready condition, so consider this:
- Store firearms in a cool, dry container, like a safe. Even consider burying your materiale.
- Add a dehumidifier or similar air catalyst.
- Coat gunmetal surfaces with a true synthetic lubricant, free of solvent – that residue will be your undoing.
- Take it to the next level after treatment. Put guns in plastic wrap like a Ziploc for handguns and use a straw or vacuum sealer to remove the air. Then, wrap it up and secure with duct tape. Why not.
- Then stow it away as explained above.
That should be good until you are ready. Don’t forget to take care in preserving and protecting ammunition as well. Of course, if your defensive needs are immediate, make such tools more readily available. Timing is everything.
Be the Eagle Scout. Think things thru. Have a plan. Make preparations. Keep it to yourself with a low profile. If your plan is to survive, the paranoid if not cautious tend to fair better than most.
