Find a work area with enough space to do what you have to do, and consider the following:
- A man cave without a good stable table isn’t enough.
- Give yourself enough workspace.
- Come up with a work mat or similar material to protect the table underneath. Even disposable kraft paper is an option.
- Have a place to collect loose parts and something to prevent items from rolling away.
- Make sure you have what you need before getting started, including: gun lube, gun cleaner, necessary tools and disposables like a wipe down cloth and cotton patches, making sure you have the right size for the caliber of firearm bore you are working on.
- For a long gun, a Tetra Gun Provise is a good platform to use to stabilize the rifle or shotgun in place.
- Make sure you have good lighting.
- Choose a well-ventilated room, and even have an exhaust fan if you are really serious, especially if you are not a one-timer.
- Arrange for peace and quiet as you set aside the time to pull out your firearm maintenance items.
- Have a gun care accessories case to stow away all of this stuff unless you are set-up with a good shelving system loaded with trays, etc.
Gun care, as it turns out, can be a form of therapy, so take advantage of this as an excuse to step away from your regular hectic life to take care of your investment in hardware. Enjoy.
