Firearm Maintenance Tips

Somebody asked how much can you talk about gun care or firearm maintenance. I answered with yet another blog post. It’s ok. Not everybody is as immersed in the subject as I am after so many years. This is simply my thing.

I have heard so many diverse opinions and perspectives on taking care of gunmetal and other related materials, but I have a good fundamental understanding of do’s and don’t’s when it comes to cleaning and lubricating firearms, whether it be a handgun, a rifle or a shotgun. Note the following:

  1. A gun, when fired, will accumulate fouling.
  2. Carbon fouling and other debris needs to be removed to prepare for the next shooting event to occur successfully and without issues.
  3. Guns can be forgiving, but also quite finicky.
  4. Gun lubes are not equal and they can’t be generalized.
  5. Gun cleaners are also not all the same.
  6. Lube and cleaner should be understood before using.
  7. Do not mix different brands’ products to avoid reactions.
  8. Don’t overdue it but be thorough.
  9. Ignoring gun care doesn’t make it go away.
  10. Take care of your investment. One day, it may save your life.

Conduct research on the net. Ask questions in stores or with factories. Take it slow an maintain firearms with care. Think about what you are doing, which includes keeping safety in mind. I know not everybody agrees.

In you end, you do want to thorough clean your guns, but you really want them to be well lubricated and ready to operate as flawlessly as possible so they are deemed reliable. This is what I refer to as keeping your firearms in “fire-ready condition” and of course, easily accessible, but please follow the gun laws in your state, and secure them responsibly.
