When I got into this almost 30 years ago, it was a Glock. I knew people throughout the industry and there was a alot of influence from SigSauer, Smith & Wesson and a bunch of smaller brands. The vibe was definitely coming from the semiautomatic world and not so much revolvers though Ruger, Colt and S&W were at the top of my list.
I remember I knew some of the original Glock guys at the time. An original salesman who was so proud of his low number Gen 1 pistols. Another was a former, original Navy Seal who was very knowledgeable. Then there was the rangemaster at Glock HQ who died tragically years later. That’s the list of influenceers who come to mind, topped off by my old industry buddy Dave Sevigny who has one more IDPA matches than even he can remember. All good guys. That’s important.
People have come and gone over the years of course, and I learned alot from many of them – experienced competitive shooters, factory engineers, technicians and executives alike, and a few special people who served our country when called upon and sacrificed as required. They all matter, and they will all be remembered. And by coincidence, not one of them was a bleeding heart liberal ashamed of his country. I didn’t need anyone to tell me that to know.
The love for the sport, an admiration for the hardware and the appreciation for the level of quality recreation is unmatched, equalled only by my connection to fishing. Very similar, but different. I’ll take them both.
So, I do understand how someone can be lured in and become a gun junkie. This is not a bad thing, but it could affect the wallet, and possibly a marriage, but then again, she will be missed. Ha ha.
Rifle and shotgun fandom is a little different, especially as you immerse yourself in the different niches of competition, for example. And then there is hunting. And lastly, the range, whether indoors or outdoors. Either way the firearms phenomenon is very real and millions of people appreciate, so please don’t mess with that. Not everybody listens.
As an onlooker, military-grade weapons are very fascinating and should be left to the professionals for the most part, but you can’t help but be interested. Movies do contribute to this love affair.
Showing your friend how to handle a shotgun for clay or skeet shooting. Teaching your grandson how to handle a rifle and scope in the field. Your first NRA safety course. It is all part of the experience. In any case, it is a choice. Your choice.
