Best Gun Lubes & Cleaners for Firearm Maintenance

Gun Lubes and Cleaners that work best, if at all, when used properly

Over the years I have seen many different products come and go, and few have been as special as advertised. At the same time, I have heard so many different opinions on how to clean and lubricate guns and firearm accessories. Fascinating.

As I have said many times, oil is not oil, grease is not grease, and cleaner is not cleaner. With that said, I know some people just won’t understand let alone believe those words. Once you think about it, it should make sense. Believe it or not, material is formulated for a purpose and even tested to prove the point. That is not the case, however, with common general use products that gun owners sometimes choose to use over gun-centric items.

Do yourself a favor and use real gun cleaners and gun lubricants. Of course, do your own homework and don’t fixate on opinions from the loudest, least educated voices on the internet. Better yet, stay clear of message boards.

What counts is performance. There are quite a few good gun cleaning products and particularly high-performance oils and grease but don’t be fooled by copycats. Any product will work to some degree, but why would you waste your time on something designed for cars, for example.

Tetra Gun invented the first synthetic gun care product many years ago based on the premise of bore conditioning whereas the lube, when polished in to gunmetal, will penetrate and provide a friction fighting barrier from the environment that makes dry wiping carbon fouling after a shoot a reality.

Cleaning firearms with solvents, wiping and brushing off fouling, and then lubricating with a quality firearms lubricant is the best path, put plainly. So, whether you go with a traditional gun cleaning rod from a cleaning kit, or a bore cleaning rope or other, you are pretty much accomplishing the same thing.

In the end, you want a weapon that is in what I call “fire-ready condition” and it means you have yourself a highly reliable gun that will operate after sitting in a holster for a long period of time. Not all products can do that.

I am biased because Tetra Gun grease, lubricant, Triple Action CLP and cleaner formulas like Action Blaster aerosol, Copper Solvent and Carbon Cleaner are what I know as reliable, and not overpriced like some others.

  • Clean inside the bore
  • Wipe out or brush out fouling
  • Lubricate with a superior grease or oil

You have spent plenty on your handguns and your long guns, so don’t skimp on the most important category of accessories there is – gun care. Good luck.
