Next year will mark the 40th anniversary for the invention of the Tetra Gun synthetic fluoropolymer lubricant protectant technology, a pioneering innovation that has served the firearms industry and sports shooting community very well.
I can reflect on important milestones over the years, beginning with the initial R&D breakthroughs made in cooperation with the former duPont chemists who worked with Tetra’s founding developers who developed uses for PTFE as a key ingredient in reducing friction, and much more. It was much more complicated than it sounds.
Aerospace and defense applications, along with specialty industrial uses were among the first to appreciate what the Tetra Gun formulas could deliver.
- NASA space gun
- Boeing and subcontractors used it on critical aircraft parts
- Industrial machinery uses increased longevity and reliability
Of course, the most impact of the patents came with gun applications. As I’ve been reminded, in the 1990s, Tetra Gun was a hot product, both the grease and the lubricant, following by the gun spray. New and exciting always has curb appeal, but when something quickly becomes the best choice, it becomes a keeper. That hasn’t changed. Highlights:
- Tetra Gun invented bore conditioning
- Many years ago, the last polar bear legally shot years ago occured in negative 37 degree temperatures in Alaska.
- Top competition shooters relied on Tetra to provide piece of mind at the range in the most critical moments.
- Gun stores found it necessary to stock Tetra Gun products at all times.
- The original Thompson Center cobranded the products for their T17 black powder gun care line.
A lot has happened over time as many other brands have surfaced with similar or vastly different gun lube technologies, and many have since vanished. Tetra Gun has survived the test of time because it works.
Inspiring innovation by competitors is a compliment, but the most rewarding fact is that the firearms business will never look back to the old choices, the ones that don’t make any sense if they can be avoided. Tetra Gun is progress, and we are currently working on what comes next.
