New Gun Ownership deserves a proactive firearm maintenance education
With so many experts and outspoken voices within the 2A community, its no wonder why gun newbies have so many varying perspectives on gun care or firearm care approaches.
In my world, cleaning and lubricating guns is a big part of handling a gun, which should work in tandem with firearms training and firearm safety. To that end, a new gun owner should research gun training as much as the firearms themselves. A gun trainer should be certified in some way, have some experience, and have good reviews from prior gun newbie clients. Otherwise, how can you be an educated consumer.
As part of this discussion, with owning a firearm should come some awareness that you need to protect your investment. Hopefully, and unfortunately not always, that should begin at the gun store. For the new firearms owner, they simply have to do their own research as well to get more than one opinion. Knowledge is power. Here are a few tips as it relates to buying firearms maintenance products:
- Don’t buy gun lubes or gun cleaners from fly-by-night companies that claim great things they can’t deliver. Do your research.
- Get feedback from a gunsmith as well as experienced gun owners you know and trust.
- Speak to more than one firearms retailer for advise to formulate your own truth.
- Use products best by following application instructions
- Defer to firearm manufacturer user’s guide details about gun lube or gun cleaner products even though they are often intentionally vague.
- Follow instructions on label and don’t use a gun oil or gun solvent that you are concerned about, or proceed with caution by testing on a non-critical surface – and don’t use non-firearms branded products. Avoid household or automotive cleaning agents. They are not the same.
- Remember, its not just about what your buy, but how you use it.
There are many FFL dealers out there that offer gun care products as well as almost endless online gun product sources but if you want to find all of the Tetra Gun care brand cleaning products, go to http://www.tetragundirect.com or do a search. Unfortunately, there are many webstores that don’t actually carry what they are displaying. It’s an issue, so start with the most popular web retailers if you are going that route.
