You still need to clean, lubricate and protect even the shortest gun bore
A Short Barreled Rifle (SBR) is a legal term for a shoulder-fired firearm with a barrel that’s less than 16 inches long, or an overall length of less than 26 inches. Needless to say, A short barreled rifle differs from an AR pistol is that the rifle has a buttstock or pistol brace. This is a technicality with ATF and gun laws in specific States, but that’s the gist.
Theoretically any gun cleaning rod will do, but it is wise to choose a rod length that is compatible with the barrel length and of course caliber bore you are cleaning out. We recommend the Tetra Gun Prosmith 19″ rod, which will minimize the chance of bending vs. a much longer firearms cleaning rod.
Generally speaking, when you apply pressure in pushing a brush or patch holder down the barrel it will bow out and make contact with the bore metal so you have to be careful not to push too hard. Too many times, people find out they have warped the rod after it is too late.
Other than that, the accessory attachments – the bronze or nylon brush, patch holder, cotton mop or brass jag – are all used the very same way as the tool used to scrub, and even apply solvent or gun oil onto the bore gunmetal. Clean as much as needed, followed by bore lubrication.
The top SBRs include: Daniel Defense DDM4, SigSauer MCX Rattler, CCMG Banshee MK4 and CMMG MK47 Scorpion, among some more exotic choices like the B&T APR8, Saint Victor SBR, Q Honey Badger SD or many custom options out there.
Among Sporting Rifles, the SBRs are becoming popular and I can say first hand that they can be a lot of fun, especially in 9mm or .22 cal., considering that the shorter the barrel, the greater the degree of difficulty in target accuracy. That is the trade off, though a lighter rifle is also appreciated.
Of course, we don’t want to confuse the SBR category with short-barreled traditional rimfire or centerfire rifles that you might see in .17 cal., .204 or .22, used for varmint hunting or for training Boy Scouts or other early learners. Keystone Sporting Arms, Ruger and Henry probably offer these choices. We are talking about either single short or low capacity magazine designs.
