The mindset of the average gun owner is disappointing. It is as if they hadn’t learned anything as a child about putting away their toys or cleaning their rooms. Life lessons really do make us who we are.
I know that some people are committed to taking care of their treasured firearms collection because they understand the importance, if not the gratification of keeping their guns looking clean and showroom ready.
I also know that there are many people who don’t take it serious, don’t care enough to try or just don’t understand. I am not sure which of these profiles is worse.
Personal responsibility is important and one’s mindset can be best portrayed in how they approach gun care, similarly to how they look at firearms safety. It is a perception issue that we share as gun owners because those want to limit or even strip us entirely of the right to bear arms dig for any possible excuse to villainize law abiding second amendment supporters and firearm owners. People need to be aware, and careful.
Gun safety should be a commitment for everyone, at home, in the field and even at a gun store. That goes for gun shop staff as well. The more positive behavior and firearms safety education and practice that occurs, the better.
Unfortunately, a few bad apples literally spoil the whole cart. We are a nation of over 330 million people. The stats are still very good, but every shooting is a tragedy.
So, for firearms maintenance, use good products and be diligent. Store any firearm in a cool, dry place like a gun safe, and make sure it is locked up one way or the other. It is the owners responsibility.
