And how to apply and remove gun solvent residue before lubricating
I only directly recommend that you use Tetra Gun care lubricant and cleaner products, but this advice should apply to most branded gun lube and gun cleaning products out there.
[WARNING: Use automotive products on gunmetal at your own peril.]
- Clean gunmetal thoroughly with a well rated cleaner, and try to use something milder for light duty use, and a stronger solvent only if you have heavy buildup.
- The same goes for applications. Use cotton or other wipe products, and use a nylon brush, followed by a bronze brush when needed. Brushing or scraping with steel tools is not recommended.
- Apply gun oil or gun grease to clean, dry parts.
- Don’t over-lubricate.
- Since you probably read that too quickly, that means removing solvent residue before lubrication. 91%+ isopropyl alcohol is a nice follow-up wiping material to remove said residue.
- In the case of a cleaner, lubricant, protectant (CLP) formula, this is less of an issue.
- Polish lube into gunmetal. If the firearms is dripping wet, good luck.
- Remove excess material.
- If gunmetal is lubricated with a superior product before shooting, carbon fouling is much less likely.
- With Tetra, you can literally dry wipe powder residue off after shooting. The lube will still be there at least under the surface.
This is a generalization for you as a starting point. For the gun part specific details, always refer to a gun manufacturer’s user’s guide if not their maintenance guide or detailed application instructions if they are available.
Leaving bore solvent on gunmetal surfaces will increase the chance of future issues, especially in humid conditions.
I strongly recommend that you do not mix different companies’ cleaner products since you don’t know what the reaction might be. Nobody wants gumming or caking or other messes you might create. Be aware, clean with care.
