I keep getting asked these questions, which is funny considering that there are chrome lined barrel makers who claim you don’t need to lube the bore let alone clean them out. That is an ignorant misnomer.
Even if that coating is effective, there is still vulnerable metal underneath, for starters.
Putting lubrication aside, which should be an automatic “yes” to when being faced with “to lube, or not, that is the question.”
When asked about if it is fine to use bore solvents on chromed gun barrels, which is really about the bore surface, the answer is general yes because cleaners should not directly harm chromed surfaces.
However:
- My philosophy is to use a gentle cleaner before having to go stronger, only as needed.
- Start with our cleaner degreaser pump spray, which is a water based solution.
- Upgrade to our Action Blaster cleaner degreaser aerosol if you need more “oomph”
- And, if need be, go stronger still with our Copper Solvent liquid.
- There is no need to comment on other companies products.
2. Don’t mix with other chemicals. Remove pre-existing solvent residue with isopropyl alcohol.
3. Brushing could create a substrate for hard buildup accumulation so go nylon before bronze and NEVER steel. Of course, if all you need is patches or swabs, that’s ideal.
4. ANECDOTE: It’s funny how chromed barrel manufacturers claim the bore’s don’t need lubrication let alone solvent. A terrible misunderstanding of reality. If it were true, than why we are getting these questions from gun owners experiencing reduced performance and frustrating accumulations.
5. After using Copper Solvent or other choices, don’t let it sit there. Let it do its job and them remove it. (ref. point 2).
6. And lastly, I can’t stress enough, always begin by referencing the manufacturer’s recommended care instructions. Usually, factories play it safe and are a vague and as cautious as they can be, understandably, putting aside their ego that demands that they stand by the greatest product in the world.
This advise will be similar for nitrided barrels.
In other words, if you treat gun care the same as if you had regular steel gunmetal, you can go on and have a good chance to live a fairly normal life.
