So many organizations. So many disciplines to choose from for shooters
United States Practical Shooting Association aka USPSA is speed and accuracy oriented and is better known for the different classes of handguns than the rifle and shotgun divisions. Widely recognized with a big network.
International Defensive Pistol Association aka IDPA is literally about what it is all about. If you want to get into modified guns and simulated real life self defense experiences, this is it.
Steel Challenge Shooting Association aka SCSA features an 8-stage competition centered around speed, put simply.
International Practical Shooting Association aka IPSC is the most globally recognized competitive shooting network featuring handgun, rifle and shotgun divisions.
Amateur Trapshooting Association aka ATA is the national clay target shooting association featuring its Grand American World Trapshooting Championships held every summer.
Similarly, there is the National Skeet Shooting Association aka NSSA and the National Sporting Clays Association aka NSCA.
Single Action Shooting Society aka SASS is the best known name if not synonymous with cowboy action shooting as it relates to single-action revolver shooting.
The Civilian Marksmanship Program aka CMP is a well established organization covering firearm disciplines from rimfire sporter rifles to long distance competitions and youth shooting sports training, though their reputation is capped off by their famous Camp Perry matches.
Among the growing list of 3-Gun shooting organizations is 3-Gun Nation, which is designed for competition shooters to engage targets across all three disciplines – handgun, rifle and shotgun. Needless to say, you need to train to properly prepare yourself.
Lastly, the NRA Competitive Shooting Program offers events covering many disciplines including muzzle loading, high power, smallbore, full bore, lever action, precision pistol and air pistol, among others. You can read more about that on their website or in their Shooting Sports USA magazine.
Sorry if I left out any competitive shooting sports organizations. I am sure I did. The point is that organized competition is a great way to bring people together and enjoy any of the many fun niches within the overall sport.
