With some variation, cleaning patches, whether round or square, are the long-standing go to for applying cleaner and lubricant down firearm bores. It really just comes down to the size of the patch itself and how it is used.

Loaded into a patch holder or wrapped over a bronze brush are most common uses for cotton patches when using a gun cleaning rod, but they can also be used loosely to wipe down other gunmetal surfaces. Even then, there is some flexibility when it comes to matching the patch size with the caliber bore. Sizes range from 3/4″ to 3″ covering everything from a .17 cal. air rifle to a 12 gauge shotgun. In the end, you want something that is a fairly tight fit to make the most contact so that it picks up or delivers the most material down range.
Ultimately, you do want to see clean patches come out the breech end of the muzzle. Cleaner first. Then lube oil. Finally, clean, dry patches. Those are the results you want assuming you are trying to achieve a good job.
