Bronze Brushes do not do Damage to Bore Gunmetal

And the myth about the need for bore fouling accumulation for results

There are people out there in the firearms community who are seasoned veterans in shooting sports who make claims that bronze brushes used to clean carbon fouling out of gun bore surfaces are damaging the gunmetal, including messing up the rifling.

That is not true.

For this fact only, as I know it having worked with firearm manufacturers as well as a metallurgy expert years ago, bronze can’t wear out hardened steel because it is a softer metal.

So, where does that myth go from there?

These voices are often the same ones who think accumulating buildup inside the barrel is a good thing.

Another ignorant superstition, even if their experience says otherwise. Here’s why?

In the old days, when the machining of gun bores was less sophisticated and not as finely precisioned as they are today, there was a lot of play, even if we are talking about micrometers. And the only gun solvents were the traditional ones that left much of their own residue. While today, gun barrel manufacturing technology does not allow for much room to deviate from perfect tolerances. That means that you need to do your best to clear the way for a perfected sized bullet to travel down the even more perfectly fitted bore diameter. Any fouling will create a performance problem.

Makes sense?

I have heard from competition shooters, especially precision shooting junkies who subscribe to this point of view. So, find me a single manufacturer that would agree with this premise. I know the defense community doesn’t.

Talk about the dumbing down of America. Geez.

So, refocus on what makes sense. Use whatever quality bore solvent / copper cleaner you want but then remove that residue before lubrication. Then, polish top grade grease, oil lube and / or clp to gunmetal surfaces.

Remember, copper fouling is not a good thing, and clean is better. Cleaned and lubed to be accurate. That’s what we call bore conditioning.
