Firearms Maintenance Tips

From within the ranks of all of the niche firearm user communities, precision shooters are among the most discriminating if not superstitious about their methods, the equipment selection and their approach to best practices – not to mention everyone’s lucky rabbit’s foot to hitting the mark dead center.

Among the idiosyncrasies is this long-standing position on whether or not to leave fouling in the bore as a benefit to superior placement thru ballistic reliability. This may have merit historically, but I view it as a problem for anyone with a modern era gun barrel. Between the bore and the ballistics, the finely-precisioned metal-to-metal contact should not logically allow for any debris to “help” the bullet along on its path. Doesn’t make sense.
Instead, it will slow you down as an incumbrance, every so slightly. We are talking 100th’s of a second, or as little as 1% less FPS (feet per second) in velocity, but this is real. However, you can definitely waste time trying to train an old dog new tricks.

From the opposite perspective, conditioning the bore, as defined by Tetra Gun over a third of a century ago, is the principal that if you properly lubricant bore gunmetal, ideally with a synthetic lubricant, you will enhance performance. Polish lube into the surface, penetrating and getting underneath the pores and creating smoother surface, should improve performance. This means something to the performance shooter.

I use precision shooting as an example to demonstrate my belief in fundamentally proper firearm maintainence, Clean, then lubricate. Or use a CLP (cleaner, lubricant, protectant). Either way, you are providing a surface treatment that will reduce friction, while providing a substrate by which you can minimize material buildup such as carbon and copper fouling, making gun care easier. It could be that simple.

Tip #2: When it comes to cleaners, you can choose from a long list of products out there, but you ultimately want to get solvent residue completely off before lubricating, because in the end, you only want lubricant to be making contact with the metal for best results.

Many companies have parroted these principles over the years, of course touting their own product, but those know and appreciate the difference in one’s oil and cleaner choices will benefit most. That is, if you care.
