Using Bore Cleaning Accessories

Apply gun cleaning solvent to metal gun parts, especially inside the bore.

  • Accumulation of fouling will only interfere with your gun’s optimal performance by slowing down or even preventing expected motion.

Cotton patches are a highly absorbent carrier material for gun cleaner and are most commonly used when loaded onto a brass patch holder for swabbing the inside of a gun barrel with a cleaning rod.

  • The patches will both deliver bore solvent and pick up fouling as you will see black residue accumulation as a contrast to the white cotton.

Use a phosphor bronze brush to scrub carbon fouling off of gunmetal.

  • Pour copper solvent directly onto brush for added cleaning efficacy.
  • After use, hit the brush with gun cleaner spray to stop the chemical reaction since the solvent can literally dissolve not just the accumulated fouling residue, but the bronze bristles themselves.

A cotton bore mop, which is a densely packed cotton swab that makes for a reliable carrier of bore cleaner or gun lubricant oil down the barrel of any pistol, rifle or shotgun.

  • The mop attachment is not a one-time use throwaway product because it can be cleaned and reused over and over again.

The brass jag concept is superior to a patch holder in that it is designed to provide a truly tight fit, making it very effective at pickup up powder residue in the bore. Contact is the key.

  • You need to get a unique jag to match every barrel caliber that you want to do bore cleaning on (e.g. .22 cal. jag for a .22 cal. barrel) because it will be a loose fit on a .243 caliber barrel and larger.

Stick with the 8-32 standard thread that covers .22 cal. – .50 caliber.

  • If you mistakenly buy gun cleaning rod attachments from a brand that uses a different size thread, it won’t be compatible (won’t fit) with anything else you might have on your bench let alone at the store when you go back for more.
  • Of course, .17 cal. to .204 is a smaller threading, as it the shotgun threading which is much larger. For that reason, there is a rod adaptor available for those trying to clean a shotgun barrel with a rifle cleaning rod.

From there, you do want to choose a decent firearm cleaning rod, ideally made of stainless steel, and preferably coated to minimize the chance of it scratching the bore metal itself.

  • The leading cause of scratches on the rod itself comes from entering the barrel on an angle, or even when you bow the rod under excessive pressure, but sliding across the throat of the barrel is going to abrade the finish right off, no matter how resilient the coating is.
  • Gun cleaning rod coating is also meant to be chemically resistant because bore solvent can do damage as well.

In the end bore cleaning is very important but the ultimate fact is how well firearm parts are lubricated, especially when it comes to treating the inside the barrel aka bore conditioning. Tetra Gun care invented this concept back in the 80s and it is as relevant as it has ever been. Choose a superior gun lube. Why not?

  • Keep your guns in fire ready condition, including protecting them properly in long term storage.
  • All gun metal surfaces should be coated in oil or grease, even if it is a light barrier coating because gun lube is also about protecting.
  • Ensure that you choose a gun oil or grease that performs in the operating temperature range – they don’t all do that – and think about whether the same will be true about other factors of your environment, whether it be saltwater and humidity, or sandy, dusty conditions.
  • Remove solvent residue before lubrication. Otherwise, it may counteract the lube’s performance since cleaner is designed to break down lube. Makes sense, right?
