Best Gun Grease – Any Gun

There are many opinions out there, but nobody should be disputing that grease shouldn’t be used on firearms. That is shear ignorance, but then again, many gun owners out there are strong willed, opinionated and listening to the wrong sources of information. Here are the facts:

• The vast majority of firearm manufacturers use grease in production and service.

• Gun factories sometimes mistakenly only mention lubrication in their manuals by referencing using a quality gun oil. Great. So helpful.

• Almost every gunsmith I ever met uses grease to some degree.

• There are some specific gun parts that will benefit from grease over oil that can’t be denied.
  • It stays in place and won’t migrate like oil
  • It has more body to it, so it handles high wear points
  • Oil is usually thin and doesn’t deliver enough protection when it comes to high wear or heavy pressure and load bearing

That being said, grease should not be used on the bore surface because it could slow down and interfere with the ballistic event.

Grease should not be used on the outer body of a firearm for no other reason than appearance.

Remember that not all greases are the same even if they look alike. The difference is in the composition and what it does or doesn’t. For example, old school military grade mothballing grease is not the same as what should be on critical components when going to the range to shoot.

Grade 1 grease means very light. Grade 2 grease, like bearing grease, is heavy and only intended for either packing bearings, use on mounts and other slow-moving applications vs. everyday use of grade 1 formulas.

Oil isn’t all the same either. Automotive or household products are just that, and an authentic firearm oil, especially a synthetic product, is designed to deliver a very different kind of lubrication in a very specific type of environment that includes carbon fouling if not bore solvent.

My advice is to collect different professional opinions and realize what makes sense. It can be a bit confusing out there with so many so-called experts chiming in. Eventually, you might even realize that I am giving you sound advice because at some point the truth will clear it up for you.
