Taking care of your firearm is more than just a good habit – it’s a must. Keeping your guns clean and well-maintained ensures they’ll perform reliably and lasts for many years. Whether you’re a seasoned shooting sports pro or just starting out, having the right tools and operational mindset makes all the difference. Today, I’m sharing my go-to gun care guide specifically as it relates to ultrasonic gun cleaning so you can keep your firearms in what we call fire ready condition.
Ultrasonic Cleaning Bath
For those who want to take gun care to the next level, an ultrasonic cleaner uses sound waves to remove dirt from small parts. It’s a fantastic tool for cleaning intricate components without harsh scrubbing. Put simply, prolonged vibration literally shakes buildup off of gunmetal surfaces on a submicronic level. There are decades of proof of its effectiveness.

Simply Steps
- Disassemble your firearm parts according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This prevents damage and ensures you clean all necessary parts. That includes knowing what not to clean, if anything.
- Place small gun parts in the small parts basket. This is to help you NOT lose anything.
- Run a cleaning cycle. Clean from the chamber end to the muzzle. Follow ultrasonic gun cleaning machine application instructions in the user’s manual.
- Rinse with water to remove cleaner residue. An air hose will probably help accelerate that step. Alternatively, isopropyl alcohol could be a good choice, and it dries quickly.
- Run an oil bath cycle. I am not a big fan of soaked guns so to avoid a mess, but if you take this step, ideally with the Tetra Gun Triple Action CLP oil, wipe all gunmetal down afterwards.
- Conduct a detailed inspection for detailed lube. This helps you spot issues and avoid losing small parts. Additionally, going to back to my concern about oiling the entire gun, you want to use grease on specific gun part surfaces.
Ultrasonic Firearm Cleaning Tips
Replace cleaner bath solution as needed. Most will last you many cycles, but you still want to pour out sediment that mostly accumulates on the surface or for carbon and heavy metals, that material will accumulate on the bottom.
Handling cleaning solutions. Ultrasonic gun cleaner formulas are not all equal because their chemical makeups are different, so there could be different effects such as residue and potential impact on gun finishes. I have seen some that leave a dry powdering scarring on gunmetal so you want to avoid them or at least wipe down any of the potentially damaging residue. You at least seeing a bone-dry gun, which is not good, so I can see where oily wet finishes could be appealing.
Feel the heat. It has been proven that ultrasonic machines running in heat mode will produce better results. Set to the right temperature will open up the pores of the metal a bit better, along with making the follow-up lubrication more effective, theoretically. It won’t hurt.
Ultrasonic gun cleaning is not the whole picture. It is valuable but it is in no way an all-in-one solution. You still need to pay close attention to your firearms with detailed care before reissuing them into operational readiness.
Adding ultrasonics to your overall firearm maintenance regimen should help but the choices out there can be overwhelming. Tetra Gun is a trusted supplier as a bona fide developer and manufacturer of gun cleaning chemicals whose products are tested and proven to keep firearms in peak condition. Just scan the internet for ratings like on Amazon.

If you want to explore a great selection, check out Tetra Gun Direct. They offer high-quality, direct-supply gun care essentials that I trust for my own firearms. Their products are designed to meet the needs of serious firearm owners and gunsmiths alike.
The photo at the beginning of this blog is Tetra’s main Cleaner Degreaser ultrasonic cleaning bath formula. It is a non-foaming, water-based mix that is proven effective and specially formulated to leave minimal residue. No nasty order. Won’t irritate skin. It is pH buffered neutral and includes a rust inhibitor that provides the short-term protection you might need before relubricating your cleaned and vulnerable gunmetal surfaces.
The Suppressor Cleaner Bath gallon jug of blue solvent pictured above is a little different and is a bit stronger, especially when it comes to the hard carbon buildup you may find on some guns and more specifically, suppressor parts like the baffle. Either way, these are effective firearm cleaners. Silencers don’t complain.
Please note, nothing is a substitute for regular firearm maintenance, which includes at least doing a dry wipe down of guns after action. Of course, a properly pre-lubricated pistol, rifle or shotgun is less likely to attract fouling debris to begin with.
