The Case for Nylon Bore Brushes

The brass fitted bronze bore brush as the most common attachment for any gun cleaning rod became the standard in firearm maintenance a very long time ago, even before the 8/32 threading was accepted as the norm.

There has also been the nylon brush alternative which is much less popular. It’s funny, because the one piece double ended mil-spec style toothbrush, if you will, is widely recognized as a gun care essential within military and recreational shooting circles.

Nylon can do a great job, especially for firearms under light duty use when it comes to removing carbon fouling. Powder residue is the main culprit when it comes to bore buildup, but when it comes to hard fouling, especially copper fouling, you will quickly realize the need to go with bronze brush scrubbing action. Plus, a strong copper solvent will eat the nylon bristles. But then again, it will dissolve bronze brushes too if you don’t neutralize the chemical reaction right after use. So, nylon is worth it, often enough.
